The Fortress Europe is expanding and the EU is increasingly working together with its neighboring countries, so that the latter are more and more taking over the defense against migrants. Who nevertheless gets through has to expect that he or she is deported under inhumane circumstances. Within the Union too exclusion is gaining ground, in order to shut off certain segments of the population from public life. Moreover, so called gated communities have emerged, which are to give their residents the feeling of total security.

Book Presentation & Discussion: BEOGRAD GAZELA
- Travel Guide to a Slum
Afterwards panel discussion with the authors Lorenz Aggermann / Eduard Freudmann
/ Can Gülcü and Judith Laister, cultural anthropologist and Dieter Halwachs,
socio-linguist.
Although there are a great many slums throughout Europe, hardly anyone ever
asks how they come into being, how life within them transpires, and what impact
such a location has on the day to day life of its residents. One particularly
striking example of such a settlement lies under the highway bridge Gazela in
Belgrade: tens of thousands pass it daily; nevertheless there is hardly any
reliable information about the settlement and the people – the vast majority
of whom are Roma – who are forced to live there.
The travel guide focuses attention on a place which is a good representative
example for the recent history of the Roma in Southeast Europe. The book provides
fundamental information about the social and economic structures inside the
settlement and exposes the multi-layered mechanisms of marginalization and discrimination
towards its inhabitants. www.beogradgazela.net
